Marcus Garvey Book Review essays The title of the book was Marcus Garvey: Black Nationalist. It was authored by Peggy Caravantes in October, 2003. This book is about Mr. Marcus Mosiah Garvey. What makes Marcus Garvey an interesting subject for a book is his life and the way he impacted others lives for the good. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, born Malchus Mosiah Garvey Jr., was born on August 17, 1887, in St. Anns Bay, Jamaica. He was the youngest of 11 children but grew up an only child because only he and his sister lived into adulthood and she resided in England. Marcus grew up in an integrated neighborhood and didnt pay attention to skin color early in life. At the age of 14 there was an event that changed Marcuss life. His neighbors decided to send their daughter away from home to continue her education. When she was leaving Jamaica, she told him that their friendship was over and she would not write him because he was black. The most important part of Marcus life was his love of reading and writing. Even though his father was a harsh man that didnt spend much time with Marcus, he got his love for books from him. At the age of 17, Marcus worked as an apprentice at a print shop. It was here that he learned the power of the written word. Marcus Garvey was a publisher, journalist, entrep reneur, and international crusader for Black Nationalism. Garvey led the largest organized mass movement of people of African ancestry ever. The Universal Negro Improvement Association was used as a tool to help unite and redeem the black race. He preached on the street corners in Harlem, black is beautiful, and promoted racial pride. Marcus Garvey faced many obstacles while reaching for his goals. He was shot in the leg, imprisoned on trumped up charges, and wasnt dealt with fairly by whites in business transactions.
